Veriso MCP · Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants

Use Veriso in Claude Desktop

Ask Claude who painted a work, what a signature says or what a painting might be worth, and get Veriso's analysis right in the conversation. It takes two minutes to set up, it's free, and you don't need an account.

Also works in Claude Code, ChatGPT and other MCP clients. Last updated October 2026.

What Veriso adds to Claude

Veriso gives Claude five art-analysis tools. Claude picks the right one from your question. Each one runs the same analysis as the Veriso website and apps, with the same care about not naming an artist the evidence doesn't support.

Full analysis

The complete report: likely artist and how sure Veriso is, signature, period, school, medium, subject, labels on the back and an indicative value.

analyze_artwork

Read a signature

A letter-by-letter reading of a signature or monogram, alternative readings, and whether the signature actually points to a documented artist.

analyze_signature

Read the back

Gallery and exhibition labels, stamps, handwriting, dates and inventory numbers on the back of a work, with what they suggest about its history.

analyze_verso

Who could have made it?

Possible artists with the evidence for each, the names Veriso ruled out, and an honest check of a name you suggest (“Could this be by Boudin?”).

identify_artist_candidates

What is it worth?

A cautious low–high range with the reasoning behind it and the uncertainty that matters most.

estimate_artwork

Fair use

Free for everyone, with a small allowance per person so it stays that way. See usage limits.

  1. You ask Claude

“Who painted this?” with a link to the photo.

  2. Claude calls Veriso

It picks the right Veriso tool and sends the photo.

  3. Veriso analyzes

The same analysis as veriso.art: about 30–90 seconds.

  4. Claude explains

The findings, how sure Veriso is, and next steps.

How a question about an artwork travels from Claude to Veriso and back.

Set it up

Pick the app you use. You only do this once.

Claude Desktop

Easiest: add a connector

  1. 1

    Open Settings › Connectors

In Claude Desktop (or claude.ai), open Settings, then Connectors.
  2. 2

    Add a custom connector

Click Add custom connector. Name it Veriso and paste this address:
    Connector URL
    https://www.veriso.art/mcp
Leave any sign-in or advanced options empty: Veriso doesn't need them.
  3. 3

Turn it on in a chat

Start a new chat, open the tools menu under the message box and make sure Veriso is switched on.
Illustration of the connector form. Labels may differ slightly between Claude versions.

Alternative: edit the configuration file

If connectors aren't available on your plan or you prefer a file, Claude Desktop can also load Veriso from its configuration file. This method needs Node.js installed on your computer.

  1. 1

    Open the configuration file

In Claude Desktop, go to Settings › Developer › Edit Config. Or open the file directly:
    macOS
    ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
    Windows
    %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
    Linux
    ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

If the file doesn't exist yet, create it.

  2. 2

    Paste the Veriso entry

    claude_desktop_config.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "veriso": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://www.veriso.art/mcp"]
        }
      }
    }

If the file already lists other servers under mcpServers, add only the "veriso": { … } block next to them, separated by a comma. Save the file.

  3. 3

    Restart Claude Desktop

Quit Claude completely (on macOS: Claude menu › Quit, or ⌘Q; on Windows: right-click the Claude icon in the system tray › Quit), then open it again. Closing the window is not enough.

Check that it works

  • Open the tools menu under the message box: Veriso appears with five tools.
  • With the configuration file method, Settings › Developer shows “veriso” as running.
  • Ask: “Which Veriso tools do you have?” Claude should list them.
  • Then try a real question with an image link (see the examples below). Claude asks for permission the first time it uses a Veriso tool.
  • Not showing up? Check the file is valid (every bracket closed, no trailing comma), that Node.js is installed (for the file method), and that you fully quit and reopened Claude.
Once connected, Claude lists Veriso's five tools (illustration).

Claude Code

  1. 1

    Add Veriso with one command

    In a terminal, run:
    Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user veriso https://www.veriso.art/mcp

--scope user makes Veriso available in all your projects. Leave it out to add it to the current project only.

  2. 2

    Check the connection

Run claude mcp list: you should see veriso: https://www.veriso.art/mcp (HTTP) - ✓ Connected. Inside Claude Code, type /mcp to see Veriso and its five tools.
  3. 3

    Ask a question

For example: “Use Veriso to read the signature in https://example.com/signature.jpg”. To remove Veriso later: claude mcp remove veriso --scope user.

ChatGPT and other assistants

Veriso works with any assistant or app that supports remote MCP servers. Use these settings wherever it asks for a server address:

Server URL
https://www.veriso.art/mcp
Transport
Streamable HTTP (not the older SSE transport)
Authentication
None. Anonymous access, limited per user.
Headers
Content-Type: application/json and Accept: application/json, text/event-stream. MCP clients send both automatically.
Sessions
Stateless: every request is a POST and gets a single JSON response. GET and DELETE return 405.
Images
JPG, PNG or WebP as an https URL, a data URL or base64. Up to 10 MB each and 5 per analysis.
Response time
Analyses take about 30–90 seconds. Set your client's tool timeout to at least 120 seconds.

To check the server answers, list its tools from a terminal:

Terminal
curl -s https://www.veriso.art/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'Accept: application/json, text/event-stream' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list"}'

In ChatGPT, add Veriso as a connector (Settings › Apps & Connectors) with the URL above and no authentication. You can also explore the tools with the MCP Inspector.

What to ask

Ask in your own words. Claude chooses the Veriso tool that fits. These answers are illustrations: your results depend on your photos.

Every analysis needs a photo, and Veriso has to receive it. Claude can see a photo you attach, but it can't yet pass attached files on to Veriso. So include a direct link to the image in your message: a web address that opens just the picture (usually ending in .jpg, .png or .webp). For example, right-click a photo in an online listing and choose “Copy image address”. Photos only on your phone or computer? Analyze them directly on veriso.art.
Who painted this? https://example.com/photos/harbour-scene.jpg — it was my grandmother's, about 46 × 38 cm.
Claude used veriso · analyze_artwork

Veriso reads this as a late 19th-century French oil on canvas, a harbour scene in the manner of the Normandy coast painters.

Attribution: Circle of Eugène Boudin. The style and subject are close, but the signature at lower left reads “E. Bou…” only partly, so Veriso does not name Boudin as the author.

Next step: a sharp close-up of the signature and a photo of the back would strengthen or rule out the attribution.

Can you analyze this signature? https://example.com/photos/signature-closeup.jpg
Claude used veriso · analyze_signature

Reading: “J. Martin 1923” (alternative: “J. Mertin”). Confidence: medium.

Several documented artists match this name, and none can be confirmed from the signature alone, so it does not support an attribution yet.

What is this worth? https://example.com/photos/still-life.jpg
Claude used veriso · estimate_artwork

Indicative range: €300–€700, as an unattributed early 20th-century still life in oil.

This assumes the work is unattributed. A confirmed attribution would change the range significantly. Based on photographs only, it is not an appraisal.

More things to try

  • “Could this be by Eugène Boudin?” + image link
  • “What do the labels on the back of this painting mean?” + image link
  • “Analyze this artwork in French.” + image link

Get better answers

  • Add a sharp close-up of the signature and a photo of the back.
  • Mention the size, the medium and anything you know about the work's history.
  • Ask for one full analysis rather than several small ones: each request counts towards your allowance.

Usage limits

Veriso in Claude is free and needs no account. To keep it that way, each person has a small allowance. Every request that runs an analysis counts once, whichever tool Claude uses.

3
analyses per hour
10
analyses per day
50
analyses per month

When you reach a limit

Claude tells you Veriso's limit was reached and when you can try again. Requests with an unreadable or missing image don't count.

Need more?

Researchers, dealers and institutions can ask for a higher allowance: write to support@veriso.art with how you plan to use Veriso and roughly how many analyses you need.

Coming next: sign in with Veriso

We plan to let you connect your Veriso account to Claude, so analyses use your Veriso plan (including unlimited plans) and appear in your history.

Privacy and your photos

Analyses run through Claude are handled the same way as analyses on veriso.art.

What Veriso receives

The photos Claude sends and any details from your question (size, medium, history). Veriso does not receive your name, email address or Claude account details.

Where photos are stored

Photos are stored securely in Veriso's cloud storage (Cloudflare R2) together with the analysis results, so results can be checked and the service improved.

Deleting your data

Ask us to delete an analysis and its photos at any time: email support@veriso.art with the image link you used, or see delete your data.

What results are, and aren't

AI-assisted opinions based on photographs, not certificates of authenticity or formal appraisals. Full details in our legal information and privacy policy.

Questions

Do I need a Veriso account to use it in Claude?

No. The Veriso connector works without an account or API key. Usage is limited per user so the service stays free and available to everyone.

Why didn't Claude use Veriso when I attached a photo?

Claude can see a photo you attach, but it cannot yet pass attached files on to connectors such as Veriso. Include a direct link to the image in your message instead, or analyze the photo directly on veriso.art.

Is a Veriso result in Claude the same as on veriso.art?

Yes. Every request runs the same analysis pipeline as the Veriso website and apps, with the same attribution safeguards. Claude then explains the result in its own words.

Is the result a certificate of authenticity or an appraisal?

No. It is an AI-assisted opinion based on photographs. Confirm it with a qualified specialist before buying, selling or insuring a work.

Does it work with ChatGPT and other assistants?

Yes. Veriso is a standard remote MCP server, so any assistant that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP can use it with the same address.

Prefer to upload photos directly?

The Veriso website and apps take photos straight from your device and keep every report in your history.
